La Sierra Little League Minor Cardinals 2009

3113_1036297759228_1578994767_75558_33486_n.jpg

Not a bad week overall

Since when can that be said when the team goes 0-3?  When it is the positive thinking  La Sierra Minor Cardinals of 2009!

Heading into the week the Cardinals knew they were going to be playing the Angels and the Yankees who happen to be the top two teams in the league. Some may have thought it could be ugly. Coach Tom thought differently,. “My goal was to fire the kids up and see just how well we could play these guys”.

Coach Toms goal was achieved as the Cardinals played each of the two teams very tough.

Against the league best Yankees in the first game of the week the Cards started off by taking a 1-0 lead in the first. Walks to Casey Toro, Julian Venegas, Tommy Robinson and Trevor Robinson scored the first run .

The Yanks came back in the bottom of the second scoring 5 to take a 5-1 lead. “Credit to the Yankees there, they had 5 hits in the inning. That doesn’t happen very often in the minors”, said Robinson.

The Cards threatened in both the 3rd and 4th getting 8 runners on base (combined). Base-running mistakes cost the Cards dearly though as only one of these runners crossed the plate to score. “That just killed us”, said Robinson. “To many mistakes out there. We should have scored at least 3 more runs”

Final Score Yankees 12 Cardinals 2

Highlights of the game.

#1- Vs, the leagues best team the Cards had 2 shutout innings.

#2- 14 Cards runners reach base

#3-  A beautiful double down the lleft field line for Caleb Diaz

game balls to Caleb Diaz and Aaron Cisneros

The second game of the week was a barnburner. The Angels beat the Cards 7-6 coming from behind in the 4th inning to get the win.

The day before the game Coach Tom had an idea to start Noah Caldwell pitching and follow him up with Casey Toro. “Casey has been pitching so well but we haven’t had great pitching other than him. My hope was to start Noah, get him through the first and then have Casey go the second and third.”

It sure worked well!

In the first Noah put the Angels down 1-2-3 causing quite an uproar in the Cards dugout. “Holy Cow that was awesome” Said Robinson. “Noah was great”

The Cardinals Trevor Robinson scored the first run of the game for the Cardinals in the second getting a base hit and coming around to score on a wild pitch. In the second the Angels took a 5-1 lead scoring on 2 walks 2 hits and a hit batter.

The Cards retook the lead in the fourth scoring 5 runs on thier own led by a single from Casey Toro, a triple from Daniel Villela, walks to Aaron Cisneros and Julian Venegas as well as a hit batter (Isabel Ferro). The inning was capped off by a MONSTER two run single by Michael Furness. An incredible inning for the Angels as all 8 batters reached base with the 5 runs scoring.

In the bottom of the 4th the Cards were done in by a single, a walk and a double as the Angels scored their two runs to get the win.

After the game Robinsons commented. “I cant complain whatsoever about anything tonight. We came in hoping to compete and almost got the win. Our kids tonight as a whole played a great game! This sure was a lot of fun. This will help us later on in the year”

Highlights

#1- Noah Caldwell- Unbelievable pitcing

#2- Daniel Villela with that big triple to go along with a single

#3- Aaron Cisneros- 2 more times reaching base extending his streak to 8 ina row

#4- Michael Furness- First hit of the year was his biggest!

Game balls to Michael Furness, Isabel Ferro and Noah Caldwell

Game 3 of the week was another fun one. The Red Sox  beat the Cardinals 6-5 in a tightly played game

The Red Sox started the first inning off by scoring 4 runs using only their first 4 batters. The last 3 runs scoring on a big 3 run Home Run. After that at bat was when the Cardinals pitching took over. Noah Caldwell, Casey Toro and  Daniel “D-Rod’ Villela held the Red Sox to only 2 more runs the rest of the way. “Our best pitched game of the year”. Said Coach Tom afterwards.

Offensively the first inning got off to a nice start as Jeremy Marquez singled and was followed by a Trevor Robinson walk. The wheels fell off though after that as Casey Toro popped out to the pitcher and that turned into the infamous triple play as both Cardinal runners took off. 3 up 3 down . UGH!

The second inning looked to be off to a decent start as well as Tommy Robinson led off with a walk. He moved to second and third on wild pitches SLIDING (his first ever) into both bases. Then scoring on another wild pitch sliding once again. Highlight of the ay for Tommy’s dad (‘im sure you all know him) was seeing the Red Sox coaches JD and Frank clapping for Tommy when he slid. For those who don’t know they were Tommys coaches last year and dealt with the sliding issue throughout the whole last season! It was a nice gesture by them!

Again a mental mistake hurt the Cards in the inning as Coach Tom (my blame!!!) messed up the lineup by flip flopping Michael and Caleb on the board in the dugout. Caleb was out for the second out after not even coming up to the plate. Mental error #2 for the Cards.

In the 4th the Cards scored twice led by Jeremy Marquez triple, Singles by Daniel Villela and Casey Toro a walk to Trevor Robinson and a hit batter (Tommy Robinson)

Down by two runs going into the bottom of the 5th Julian Venegas started things off by walking then scoring on an errant throw down to second on a steal attempt. 3 outs later the Game was over as the Cardinals just came up short!

Game balls to Julian “Nailz’ Venegas and Jeremy Marquez

“im real proud of Jeremy today”. Said Coach Tom after the game. “He and I talked before the game about the “old” Jeremy coming back. The Jeremy with the baseball attitude of take no prisoners. He showed it today. That was awesome. To do it to ona day when his dad was able to come out and watch was really cool too. J felt pretty good I think after the game!”

Highlights

Jeremy Marquez- 2-2 with the laser he hit in the 4th

Casey Toro- His best pitched game of the year

Noah Caldwell- Pitched even better than he did against the Angels

Trevor Robinson- Since striking out 3 times n a row vs. The Dodgers Trevor has reached base in 7 of his last 8 at bats

Isabel Ferro- Beautiful relay throw in the 4th (I loved this play!!)

Caleb Diaz- A NICE inning at first base

Fidencio Cisneros- A walk and a stolen base

Tommy Robinson- 3 slides …3 SLIDES!!!!!  (also caught his 20th straight inning)

John Toro- Teaching Tommy to slide!!!!!

Daniel Villela- Slamming the door in the 5th for the Red Sox. Great pitching job (3 Ks)

Thomas Carrasco- A big walk in the third

Next game Thursday vs Pirates!!!

Cards drop 2 of 3 to the Dodgers

This past week saw our Cardinals drop 2 of 3 games to the Dodgers.

Game 1 of the series the Dodgers won 11-3.

Game 2 of the series the Cards won 8-7

Game 3 of the series the Dodgers won 15-12

Game 1 was played last Wednesday night. It was a rough night for the Cards. “Pitching is the key for our team”, said Manager Tom Robinson. “It wasn’t there tonight. We were off our game tonight”.

The Dodgers scored 5 runs in both the first and second innings to take a 10-1 lead. Casey Toro scored the Cardinal run in the second leading off with a single and coming around to score on passed balls.

In the third inning the Cardinals tried to make a bit of a comeback as with 2 outs Noah Caldwell, Thomas Carrasco and “On Base” Aaron Cisneros walked to lead the bases. Daniel Villela then singled and Julian Venegas walked to re-load the bases for Caleb Diaz. Diaz then struck out to end it on a controversial called third strike (hey I m allowed editorial comments right????  That pitch was at his feet!!!!!!  Dang it!!!!)

“I was enthused by the third inning”. Said Robinson “The kids took a good shot at it. I’m looking forward to Saturday. Its just hard to in though when you give up 16 walks in a game”.

Another Coach Tom note- How cool was it to see the kids swing the bats in this game. Sure we aren’t getting base hits every time up but to see this young team put 5 balls in play out of the 9 outs we had in the three innings was something great. In the inning we scored our first run we had a single, and about 5 foul balls. The kids that struck out all swung the bat and though they got out they were aggressive. This WILL pay off later in the year!

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Highlights- (There are always some!)

Thomas Carrasco- a walk and more importantly his first run scored of the year! Also his first ever-game ball!!!  Nice job Thomas

Daniel Villela- 1-2 in the game

Casey Toro- another hit in his only at-bat

Tommy Robinson- A NICE one pitch strikeout (that’s right) in his first appearance on the mound this year.

Michael Furness- Winning his team a pizza party by just hitting the ball. He got one in the infield and that worked!

Game 2 on Saturday was a different story for the Cardinals. My apologies parents. We did not keep a team book on Saturday’s game so this is all off the top of my head!

The Cardinals came out fired up for this one.

“We are going with our ace Casey for this game. We have to get us a win” Said Robinson.  Casey delivered.

Mowing down hitters in the first two innings Toro took his team to a 3-1 lead headed to the third innings.

The biggest at bat early in the game came from (proud dad alert here) Tommy Robinson who got his first hit of the year. A double to left field. “Man I have been waiting to see the Big Dawg hit one”, said his DAD, Coach Tom. “I hope this gets him started offensively.

Others with key at bats early included Trevor Robinson, Daniel Villela, Julian”Nailz” Venegas and Fidencio Cisneros. Thomas Carrasco also contributed by walking with the bases loaded in the 3rd to score what proved to be the winning run of the game.

The biggest highlight of the game was in the 4th inning when with a two run lead Daniel Villela came in to pitch. Daniel who is a big fan of Frankie Rodriguez pitched an inning that would make K-Rod proud!

Cutting to the chase here. With one run scored and the bases loaded with one out Daniel struck out the last two hitters to ice the game for the Cards.

“Man that was scary”, said EVERY CARDINAL PARENT in the stands. It was sure a clutch bit of pitching worthy of a game ball for ” D-Rod” Daniel!!

And all Cardinals celebrated right after the game with a huge and extremely enjoyable pizza party at Straw Hat!

Highlights-

Outstanding game behind the plate for Tommy Robinson The Dodgers running game was non-existent on Saturday

Great game pitching for Casey Toro played on his field

Clutch at bats for Aaron Cisneros and Thomas Carrasco getting on base like they always seem to be doing.

The continued game-to-game improvement of Fidencio Cisneros (I’ve been noticing my friend!!)

And another hit by Caleb Diaz who just seems to be getting us one each game!

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Game 3 of the series played Tuesday night was quite the interesting one.  The Cards dropped the game 15-12 amidst one of the coldest night seen at the field in many years. Temperatures in the 40s wind and drizzle made the conditions tough (at least for the parents sitting out in the crowd!!!)

The game got off to a good start for the Cardinals as they scored 4 runs in the first inning. Trevor Robinson, Daniel Villela, and Casey Toro all got on base to lead things off. Jeremy Marquez and Julian Venegas also reached base in the inning and things looked pretty good.

Then things turned. The Dodgers scored 5 runs in the first and took a 5-4 lead.  “Pitching again bit us tonight”, said Robinson. “16 walks again in the game killed us. Our defense really had an off night too”

Offensively the Cards were led by Tommy Robinson who was 2-2 extending his streak to 4 times in a row on base (3 hits) Daniel Villela and Jeremy Marquez each had a hit also.

The night wasn’t a total loss though as the Cards may have developed a #2/#3 pitcher in Noah “Moose” Caldwell. Moose came in and threw a decent inning in the 3rd. Moose will be used more in the near future.

“Tonight was a real tough one to take”, said Robinson afterwards. “We should have won this game. We will get back to work Thursday at practice. There’s still a lot of season left then the tournament to pull things together. I have confidence in these kids. We just have to get back to work!”

Other highlights for game 3

(Sorry, i’m going into proud dad mode here real quick)

Tommy Robinson- taking another step in his maturity as a catcher. These past 2 games defensively have been Tommy’s best two of the year and probably his ball-playing career. As his manager i’m excited. As a dad I couldn’t be more proud. Hearing comments from no less than 5 Non Cardinal people after the game about how good Tommy is doing back there was just the best! 2 hits was cool too

Now if he would only slide!!!

Noah Caldwell- its worth another mention here. Noah comes in and strikes out the first hitter he faces in the game. If we make the play that we made an error on in the inning Noah just might get a save in a Cardinals win. Those are the breaks. Awesome job by Noah

Enjoy your game ball Moose!

Thomas Carrasco- I hope you all notice Thomas’ name in all three “highlights” parts of this article. Thomas scored another run tonight and not only that got to slide at home for the first time ever. It was cool to watch and even cooler to read about on his moms facebook page!!!!!  Good 3 game set for you Thomas!

Fidencio Cisneros- Offered 5 bucks by an uncle if he gets a hit instead walks twice. That’s taking one for the team and I REALLY believe a walk should be worth $2.50!

Trevor Robinson- 2 walks from our leadoff hitter and he has reached base 3 of his last 4 at bats

Caleb Diaz- Even though he struck out in his first at-bat I want to not that Caleb is right now being more aggressive at the plate than I have seen him in 2 years now. Keep it up Natural!

Now thanks and congratulations

Coach Fidencio Cisneros- for helping out at practice last Thursday night. Fidencio and I were a little worried when we only had a couple kids at practice. I didn’t remember that a third of our team was working the snack bar at the field. We had a very good practice that night and I do appreciate the help! Now you need a Cardinals hat

Coach John Furness- Scorekeeping two games up in the booth for us last week. All you have to do is ask John and he does it. It is appreciated Coach! I was glad to get you out of the booth last night!!!!

Our snack bar crew- Coaches John, Coach Isaac, Olivia Cisneros, and Nancy Carrasco for having a stellar night in the snack bar selling $342 dollars!

Lupe Venegas for helping with the scorebook!

Coach Shane Diaz for helping in the dugout and staying so positive!

Coach Duane Caldwell for doing his Team Dad thing in the dugout. It is a huge help!

Our Cardinal “Facebook” family for all the fun updates throughout the day. I get them on my work PDA during the day and most of them are awesome. Nancy Furness you are a crazy lady!!!!!!

Also thanks go out to Dodgers coaches Mike and Andy for 3 enjoyable games. Our teams are pretty even up with each other and I look forward to playing you guys again later on!!!

Practice Thursday at 5 up the hill

Game Saturday 11:30 vs. Yankees- Tough team………

Fun Week for the Cardinals

The La Sierra Minor Cardinals had a nice second week of the season!

Things started off Tuesday night as the Cards had their best practice of the year. Focusing mainly on base running and defense and not even swinging a bat all night the Cards worked hard and appeared ready for Wednesday’s game vs. the Pirates.

Manager Tom Robinson was excited. “Man what a good practice we had tonight. The kids busted it out there. They really worked hard learning to take good lead-offs and try to draw throws from catchers. They are going to be ready for the Pirates I know it!”

If he only remembered that 24 hours later!!!!

Wednesday’s game vs. the Pirates ended in a 6-4 loss. “I put the blame on me tonight”, said Robinson. “These kids worked so hard yesterday and I go out there and make a couple mistakes coaching third in the first inning. That really hurt!”

Trevor Robinson led off the game with a walk. He promptly stole second and went to third on a passed ball. The Julian Venegas followed up with a walk to put runners on first and second with nobody out. Jeremy Marquez then hit a shallow fly ball between shortstop and left center field. Coach Tom sent Trevor home thinking the ball would fall in. Mikey Hubert made a nice catch on the play and easily doubled off Trevor back at third for the second out. Casey Toro then tripled to right field scoring Julian. “Man that would have been 3-0 with 1 out right there” said Robinson. “Can’t blame anyone but me on that play!” Things got worse in the inning for the coach as he missed getting Casey back to third on a throwback resulting in the third out.

The Pirates scored one in the first to make it a 1-1 game. The Cardinals came back and got 1 in the second to go ahead 2-1.Caleb Diaz walked with two outs. He was followed by Michael Furness who walked, as did Noah Caldwell to load the bases. Caleb then scored on a passed ball. That inning ended as Michael was called out trying to score on a passed ball also. A controversial call (at least to us) as when Caleb’s dad Shane showed us the replay (he was recording) Michael sure looked to get his foot in before the tag.

2-1 Cardinals going to the third

The Pirates scored 5 in the third on 2 hits and 4 walks and 1 big error. The “almost” play of the inning went to Fidencio Cisneros who made a nice attempt in centerfield on the rocket that Jason Harbaugh hit. “Fidencio is a hustler”, said Coach Tom. “He is becoming a good outfielder”.  The 5 runs made the score 6-2.  Highlight #2 of the inning for the Cards was the pitching of Noah Caldwell. Noah in his first game threw very well.

Proving that they wouldn’t go quietly the Cards scored 2 in the 4th leaving the tying run on base at the end. Casey reached on an error, Daniel Villela walked. Then after an out Isabel Ferro walked to load the bases. Caleb Diaz then hit a single to score Casey and Daniel. That’s where it ended though. Nice attempt but just short!

Pirates 6 Cardinals 4

Other Highlights-

Tommy Robinson- His best game of the year behind the plate. Tommy threw out one runner at third and nearly threw out another there as well as a runner trying to steal second. He also defensively stopped more balls than he has before and took charge of his pitchers Jeremy and Noah going out and talking to them on a few occasions.

FYI Parents- Before the game I challenged Tommy to take charge of his pitchers when he is behind the plate. I told him that he shouldn’t be afraid to go out and talk to his pitcher, slow him down if necessary, tell a bad joke if the pitcher needed to laugh (he has dads sense of humor so that part is easy). Tommy did everything I said as dad and coach I was very proud! (Now we are gonna work on his hitting!!!)

Game Ball to Tommy for his good night behind the plate!

Aaron “OBP” Cisneros- OBP is on base percentage for those who may not know. It’s what Aaron is all about! Only one at bat Wednesday but of course he got on base! Nice job Aaron!

Thomas Carrasco- Continuing to work his tail off every time out there. Good things are coming for Mr. Carrasco!

Now lets talk about Friday’s game!!!

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Friday night was better…. MUCH better!!!!

Cardinals 9 Pirates 4 (Get that stupid Monkey off of our backs!!!)

The game started out a bit odd as no umpires showed up and Coach John Toro ended up calling the game from behind the plate!

Behind the big arm of Casey Toro the Cards took the reigns of this game right from the start. Toro gave up one run in the first but that was NEARLY avoided as for the second time in three games the Cards had a play at the plate in the first inning. Bryn Parks for the Pirates trying to score, a nice relay throw home from Daniel Villela to catcher Tommy Robinson a nice catch and tag from Robinson……Runner is……SAFE……Great tag…..ball fell out of the glove.  “We almost had that one”, said Coach Tom Robinson afterwards. “That’s a baseball play through and through. Everything was done right…..Tommy just lost the ball…..I cant complain!”

The Cardinals scored 5 runs in the first inning. With one out Julian Venegas walked, Casey Toro walked, Jeremy Marques Walked, Daniel Villela was hit by a pitch, Aaron Cisneros walked, Tommy Robinson was hit by a pitch (leaving a beautiful baseball bruise right above his elbow. Caleb Diaz had the big hit of the inning blasting a double to right center field off of his classmate Cody Schwartz to get the 4th and 5th runs in. That gives Caleb 2 hits and 4 RBI in the last 2 games. Folks “The Natural” is back!!!

After a scoreless second inning by both teams (Nice work Casey) The Cardinals switched pitchers to Daniel Villela (Casey was at his 40 pitch limit). Villela allowed 3 runs but struck out the side in the third.

Headed to the bottom of the third it was 5-4 Cardinals.

The Cardinals scored 4 more times in the third on walks to Julian, Casey, Jeremy, Tommy, Caleb and Aaron (again) as well as a nice base hit by Daniel. This took the score to 9-4. That’s where the game ended as time had run out.

The Cardinals get their first (of hopefully many more) win!

Highlights-

Casey Toro- 2 1/3 innings 1 run 5 strikeouts 2 walks a couple steals (including one on his own when the other manager yelled to his catcher that our kids were scared of her…..Casey took off on the next pitch and swiped a bag……Pretty dang awesome!)

Also a game ball for his good night!

And though he doesn’t know it whenever we play on the major field it shall now be called Toro Field. Casey’s two games on that field so far have been very very good!

Fidencio Cisneros- If anyone ever can make a comeback DURING an at-bat it was Fidencio. In his second at bat Fidencio had the most interesting one-handed swing I have ever seen missing the ball for strike one. Not shaken a bit he then took might hacks at the next pitches and though he struck out he really redeemed himself. He did not miss the second pitch by much and it really was his best swing of the year. “Fidencio is really going to bust out soon and make some people notice him out here!” said Coach Tom. “You’d better watch this kid!”.

Aaron Cisneros- I moved Aaron up in the lineup simply because he seems to be getting on base all the time. Sure enough he moves into the 6 spot in the lineup and takes two walks. Aaron “OBP” Cisneros on base king!

Thomas Carrasco- Taking a BIG walking the first inning and slapping Coach Tom with one of the best low fives ever!

Michael Furness- with a nice walk in the second and a very aggressive at bat in the third. Strikeout or not Michael you swinging the bat in that at-bat will only help you coming up!

Opening Day Saturday- Fun day had by all. From the opening gathering, to walking on the field, to playing in the bouncers, to taking our team picture it was a very good time Saturday.

A bid thanks to all you players for doing such a good job during the pictures. No troubles at all this year and that was awesome!

Highlight of the day though was the Minor Division Home Run Contest won by Casey Toro. Fellow Cardinals Tommy Robinson (got a ball close to the fence but not over) and Michael Furness took part in the contest too.

Toro hit one ball out of the yard in the first round to tie Garret Barth. Then in the second round swing-off the rules changed so that if neither kid hit a home run. The one who hit the ball the farthest on the fly would win………

Congrats to the big winner

CASEY TORO!!!!!

Sunday…yes Sunday a few of the kids got together to practice a little bit. This was an impromptu practice that started with Coach Tom, Shane Diaz, and Team Dad Duane talking at church and deciding to get together. Mainly this practice was to see if we could maybe start working in another pitcher. And you know what……we did!!!!!!   But that’s a secret!!!!   (I send this out to the Dodgers manager Mike…..cant give up our secrets!

Though there were no real goals in this practice other than the kids just getting together for fun. I was hoping to maybe start seeing someone step up at pitcher and to get Noah hitting…

Lets just say both were accomplished!!!!!

Michael, Tommy, Trevor, Caleb and Noah had a fun time

Upcoming this week

Tuesday- Batting cages- This is an optional night there. A few of us are going to the cages on Arlington near Harvest church at 6. ANYONE is invited to this who wants to go!

Wednesday- Game vs. Dodgers- This game has been changed to Wednesday from Tuesday.

Saturday- Game vs. Dodgers

Saturday’s game is at 9 am.  I would like to plan a pizza party for Straw Hat right after. I will go down Monday to see if we can get some tables and will let everyone know!

Cards stumble out of the gate

The La Sierra Little League Minor Cardinals got of to a tough start this week as the Cards dropped both of their games 16-6 to the Angels and 10-9 to the Red Sox.

Saturday’s game vs. the Red Sox got off to a great start.. The Cards scored 4 in the first and 2 in the top of the second to take a 6-1 lead. Hits by Trevor Robinson, Julian “Nailz” Venegas, and Casey Toro as well as walks to Michael Furness, Isabel Ferro, Robinson and Toro had Cardinal fans excited.

“That was a nice start”, said manager Tom Robinson. “We moved Trevor to leadoff today and he really pulled through for us. On base 2 of the 3 times up was nice. Julian in the two hole was a monster with two doubles (and almost a game ball) and getting on base all three times up. If we can get that production game to game we will have a good shot to do well this season despite the start”

Defensively the highlight of the game for the Cards came right away as Red Sox leadoff hitter (6 foot 17 inch) Josh crushed a ball to left field. Practice paid off as Julian in left field got to the ball threw to Daniel Villela (ball got by Trevor at short on the cut and Daniel at Pitcher backed it up) who turned and fired a strike to Tommy Robinson at the plate who tagged out the runner for out number one. “Not quite the situation we worked on doing cutoff drills but we got the out and the kids were fired up. I will take it”, Said Robinson of the play.

The second inning was a struggle for the Cardinals in the field as the Red Sox scored 5 runs off of 2 hits and 4 walks. The score after two innings was 6-6.

Down 9-6 in the 4th the Cardinals scored two runs in an impressive way. Fidencio Cisneros led off by being hit by a pitch, Aaron Cisneros then walked, as did Thomas Carrasco. “Nothing better than when the bottom 3 (no matter who they are) hitters leadoff an inning by getting on base. After a strikeout Julian Venegas blasted a double to right center field scoring both Fidencio and Aaron Cisneros.

(Out of reporter mode here like I do once or twice every write up) Julian- this was without a doubt the best hitting game in the two years now I have been coaching you. Keep up the great work buddy!

9-8 Red Sox going into the top of the 5th.

In the 5th the Cards tied the game as Caleb “The Natural” Diaz walked, stole second and scored on a fielders choice ground ball hit by Isabel Ferro. “Caleb’s not the fastest runner on the team”, said Robinson about the play “but I was not stopping him on that grounder. When the second baseman threw to the shortstop on the fielders choice to get Michael (Furness who had walked behind Caleb) out at second I knew Caleb was not stopping. It was a great play on his part! My highlight of the day was seeing him smiling in the dugout like he was after!”

9-9 Heading to the bottom of the 5th.

Pitcher Casey Toro starting his third inning of work got the two first hitters out. Then a misplayed pop up ended the game as Red Sox hitter Justice scored the winning run for the Sox and ended the day for the Cards.  “Tough way to end it, “ said Robinson after. “We will learn from this and grow as a team. Next week we get the Pirates for two and hopefully we can be at .500 after the set with them. I see good things on the horizon here”

Other Highlights

Tommy Robinson- ALMOST throwing out our first runner of the season from behind the plate. Tommy threw a bullet to Casey at third and we nearly got the kid.

Fidencio Cisneros, Aaron Cisneros, Thomas Carrasco- Our 10-11-12 hitters leading off the 4th inning all getting on base was tremendous. You guys deserve recognition for that!

Casey Toro- Casey if there was a league MVP you would be in the running already for it! Great day on the hill for you as well as at third. Don’t think I forgot your diving attempt at third in the second inning also!

(I keep saying “I” since i'm writing this but I think I can speak for coaches Isaac and John also)

Trevor Robinson- Leadoff hitter, all 5 innings at Shortstop and reaching base 2 more times. That’s 5 plate appearances with 4 times on base and 3 runs scored. A nice first two games for you Trevor!

Caleb Diaz- 2 walks a run scored a stolen base and the best (?) looking slide into second base in years in that 5th inning!

Michael Furness also getting on two more times. That’s 4 times reaching base in 5 plate appearances also! That’s a great start for the kid I promised would have his best year ever!

Isabel Ferro- Getting more comfortable each time the team is together. Isabel is our secret weapon! (Unless other teams read this!!!  Ha)

Game ball for the game vs. The Angels went to Michael Furness

Game ball for the game vs. The Red Sox went to Fidencio Cisneros…Coach Tom told Fidencio that after he made contact with a ball the first time in a game to watch out! Fidencio got himself a foul ball early. Then proceeded to get his first hit of the year in the 5th inning. Coach Tom was VERY happy to give him that game ball!

A special thanks (I will do this from time to time) to EVERYONE who helps out the team. Isaac, John Lori and myself really appreciate it!

John Furness-for everything you do at practice with us. Also for the pictures and scorekeeping/pitch counting!

Shane Diaz-   for REALLY wanting to be a part of this somehow. Wanting it so bad he tore 3 ligaments in his foot/ankle working out Caleb BEFORE School one morning. The pictures you’ve taken so far are amazing Coach! The video was great too! Shane was slated to be a full time coach coming into the season with us. Once the crutches are gone we will get you out on that field!

Fidencio Cisneros SR.- Fidencio has helped out in practice a couple times and has helped keep the kids in the dugout in line when needed.

Tami Diaz- Queen of the “game ball” (That’s all I should say or the kids might start flocking to you any time they see you with a ball in your hand eh?)

Gina Marquez and Son Chris- Scorekeeping

“Team Dad” Duane Caldwell- Also helping keep the kids in line in the dugout as well as helping at practice.

We have talked from day one about the family atmosphere we like to have on this team. You guys are the reason it happens! Thanks so much for all the help so far!

And we’ve only just begun!!!!!!

Now lets go get some wins!!!!!!!

Cardinals win practice game opener 6-3

After all their hard work of the previous 3 weeks the Minor Cardinals proved to be regular season ready with a 6-3 victory over the Pirates Friday night.

“This went better than I even thought it would,” said manager Tom Robinson after the game. “I figured we were ready, and there definitely still is some work to do but all in all I would say it was just a great night”

The Cards played well in all aspects of the game. Their pitching led by Jeremy Marquez, Casey Toro, and “Moose” Noah Caldwell was outstanding. Marquez and Toro allowing no runs and no hits. Marquez striking out the only 3 batters he faced.

Marquez, Toro, Daniel Villela and Trevor Robinson who each had one hit led cardinals hitting. Marquez and Villela stroking doubles.  “I was even more excited about the 7 walks we took tonight,” said Manager Robinson. “10 of our 19 batters reached base tonight”

Returning members of last years Farm Angels will remember our line of

‘Get em on, Get em over, Get em in” The Cardinals did that on this night. Aggressive base running also helped as anytime a ball got by the catcher someone was running.

Defensively the Cardinals passed every test in the game. Tommy “Big Dawg” Robinson and “The Natural” Caleb Diaz (yes this reporter loves nicknames) took charge at first base making big plays. Diaz  3rd inning catch of a pop fly sealing the deal for the Cards. Michael Furness also made a very nice play at second base narrowly missing a force out on a throw to second. “Even though we didn’t get the out, Michael was THINKING of what he wanted to do with the ball and did it. That was a baseball play. We will get that out during the season I promise”, Robinson, commented.

Other Highlights

Julian “Nailz” Venegas- 2 runs 2 walks and caught a mean third inning narrowly missing throwing out two kids at third

(Out of reporter mode here)- Julian was awesome to watch. During the inning you literally could see him “get it” behind the plate. Julian is going to be a good minor catcher. He and Tommy both will have us in decent shape!!!!

Fidencio Cisneros- (Nickname pending)- Dong what he always does in the three weeks we have known him. Works hard and keeps smiling.

Fidencio is going to do big things this year for us!

Aaron Cisneros- Aggressive like crazy out there. That first regular season hit won’t take long to get!!!

Thomas Carrasco- Coach Toms buddy did something not a lot of people do when they FIRST START playing baseball at this level He swung and connected on the first pitch he saw. Coach Tom didn’t even mind that he swung at the first pitch after being told not to swing till he took a strike.

Thomas thought it was a strike and swung at it!

Can’t complain there!

Isabel Ferro- Our new secret weapon. Second day with the team and she goes in to play third base and does well. ALMOST getting those two throws from Julian trying to get runners advancing. Coach Tom sees some shortstop in her future!!!!

Player of the game (game ball) went to Trevor Robinson for getting the first hit of the season for the team.

So the practice game went well. The team is ready. Game 1 is Thursday Night vs. The Angels.

Lets hope for a great season for us all!!!!!!!!!

Parents reading this on the website. More pictures (I can only put a few on here) are on the facebook sights of myself, Shane Diaz (Caleb’s dad), John Furness (Michaels Dad). Feel free if you are on facebook to look us up and check them out! Any pictures sent to me will absolutely go up there. They will also be saved for Lori to do the season ending DVD for the team. Feel free to send anything to me you’d like!!!!!

First Full Week of Practice

Very nice week of practice for the Cardinals this week. Starting off last Saturday when it was Manager Tom and Michael's dad John running the show. The first practice is always for the coaches to get an idea of what they have out there and this was no different. Highlights of the practice came from Fidencio Cisneros, Aaron Cisneros and Thomas Carrasco who worked their backsides off for their new manager. Gentlemen just know that it was noticed and it will pay off for you during the season!

Thursdays practice was average at best (it happens) with the kids still getting a feel for each other out there. Manager Tom and Coach John Toro both knew there was work to be done. The push would come Friday night.

And boy did that push pay off. Friday night was just a great practice for this team. After stretching and running a nice infield drill set up by Coach John the kids took batting practice.

"We knew we had potential to be a nice hitting club" said Coach Tom after practice. "I did not know how well we would be swinging the bats since this was the firs time we let the kids hit"

Highlights-
Julian Venegas just blasting the ball
Tommy Robinson- Showing that power that we know is there
Aaron Cisneros- Smallest guy on the field wielding a nice bat!
Casey Toro- Hitting the ball all over the yard
Trevor Robinson- Best round of bp in over a year!
Thomas Carrasco- Listening to Coach John when he was hitting and it paid off! Thomas did well
Noah Caldwell- Moose's first night back with the team and it seems like he never left
Jeremy Marquez- Shaking off the rust after a year off.....starting raking the ball at the end of his round
Michael Furness- Working hard  as always

9 kids at practice Friday....9 notes on how well they did.....Very good night!

Followed up by a very good Saturday

Stepping out of "reporter " mode for a second here I have to say that Friday and Saturday were so much fun to be a part of because of the batting practice. Coming up from the farm division and t-ball before that , BP was never this good. Kids would hit once in awhile but not often enough to keep others alert. So far in these two practices I am awed by how well we ahve done. We have to keep working hard though because Coach John, Isaac or myself wont be piching during the games. Keep working hard kids and you will see results!

Back to Saturdays practice- Just two notes as everyone hit well again! 3 guys to single out though are

Jeremy Marquez- Took a nice round of BP on Friday and made it GREAT on Saturday

Caleb Diaz- Blasting the ball. I was so happy to see that from :"The Natural"

Julian Venegas- Seems  that just like last season Julians name sure keeps popping up her eon the website. As I said so many times last year Julian is flat out a ballplayer. Those who are seeing him for the first time this season will enjoy watching this kid play!!!!!

Special thanks to John Furness "Mr. Soft Toss" for all the help this week and coming int the future!

Team Meeting

2009 got off to a good start Thursday night as the 2009 Minor Cardinals had there opening team meeting.

"Its always good for the players to meet with eachother or just to hang out and catch up with old friends before we get to practice, " said manager Tom Robinson during the party. "Come Saturday we get rolling"

The party is the 5th annual for Robinson (as well as coach Isaac Villelas) teams.  "The kids have a good time goofing around and us old folk parents enjoy relaxing a bit and talking about whats gonna happen during the year. I like some of the things im hearing already from  (Team Mom ) Lori and Tami (Diaz). This year is sure gonna be great!
